Upgrading
your car to more than 300HP? If so, you are in the right place. You’ll need to replace the factory rods with
something a bit more robust, and to do so, you’ll need some supporting
parts. To determine just what you’ll
need, you need to know:
1. Engine
Code/Type
2. What
pistons you are using
3. What
rods you are using
AEB/ATW- This is the older 058 style engine
used in Audi A4s and VW Passats up until 2000 (in North America, not sure about
the rest of the world). It is easily
identified by its external waterpump.
This engine comes with forged 9.5:1 Mahle pistons with 20mm pins-there
is no need to replace your pistons unless they are damaged. The water pump in
not normally replaced during this job.

AWD/AWW/AWP/AWM/AMB/APH/AWV/AMU*/BEA*-
This is the newer
06A style engine used in ALL transverse applications and 2001 up Audi A4s and
Passats. It is easily identified by its
lack external waterpump. This engine
comes with forged 9.5:1 Mahle pistons with 19 mm pins (*except AMU/BEA which
have 20mm pins and 9.0:1 compression).
The water pump is normally replaced during this job.
There are 2
basic options-
1. Keep the
OEM 19mm pin pistons (which are very nice) and use a set of drop in Integrated
Engineering rods. I recommend this
approach for applications up to about 400 HP.

2. Replace
the OEM pistons with 20mm pin pistons and use Scat (or other) rods with 20mm
